OpenDoors Listening Coach: general listening and IELTS-style practice inside WordPress

OpenDoors Listening Coach is a WordPress plugin that helps English learners practise listening with realistic tasks, instant marking and clear explanations. It covers everyday listening as well as IELTS-style tasks, so learners can build skills for daily life or for an exam.

The plugin includes five built-in tasks with 36 questions. Two general tasks cover booking a restaurant table and a message from a dentist. Three IELTS-style tasks follow Sections 1, 2 and 4: joining a sports centre, a museum welcome talk and a lecture on city noise. Questions include form completion, note completion and multiple choice, and several tasks contain the traps learners meet in real tests, such as corrected details, similar numbers and spelled names.

Tasks are read aloud by the browser’s text-to-speech voices, with an American or British accent and different voices for each speaker. In practice mode, learners can replay, pause and slow the recording. In exam-style mode, it plays once. After checking, learners see their score, the correct answers, short explanations and a transcript that highlights where each answer appears. You can also add your own recordings with a simple filter.

A built-in dictation tool offers ten sentences with word-by-word checking and tips on connected speech.

All of this works without an API key. For extra support, connect your own OpenAI (GPT), Anthropic (Claude) or Google (Gemini) key. Learners can create new tasks at A2 to C1 on any topic, in general or IELTS-style formats, and ask for an AI explanation when an answer is wrong. New tasks are checked by the plugin before they appear. Keys stay on your server, and you control who can use AI features and how many requests each user can make.
