OpenDoors Word Search Games is a WordPress plugin that turns vocabulary practice into a playful puzzle game. Children and English learners find hidden words in a fresh letter grid, collect stars and learn new words along the way.
The plugin includes eight built-in themes with 80 words: Animals, Fruit and Veg, Colours, My Family, School Things, My Body, Weather and Clothes. Every puzzle is generated randomly, so no two games are the same. Three levels grow with the learner. Easy uses an 8 by 8 grid with words across and down. Medium adds diagonals. Hard uses a 12 by 12 grid with words in all eight directions, even backwards.
Picture clues make learning easier: learners can find each word from its picture and first letter. Playing is simple. Tap the first letter, then the last letter. It works with touch, mouse and keyboard. Found words are coloured and crossed off the list, a hint button helps when learners get stuck, and a friendly parrot guide, sound effects, stars and confetti keep them motivated.
Teachers can print any puzzle as a worksheet with an answer key, and type their own word lists to match the current unit. If you add your own OpenAI (GPT), Anthropic (Claude) or Google (Gemini) key, teachers can also get word ideas for any topic, then review and edit them before saving. Children never talk to an AI.
The plugin is designed to be safe for children: no sign-up, no ads, no cookies, no external requests and no personal data. Stars are saved only in the child’s own browser, and random filler letters are checked so they do not spell unsuitable words.
